Required Courses
All students take an introductory set of classes in classical physics and calculus. This is followed by intermediate-level courses in computational physics, mathematical physics, electricity and magnetism, and introductory modern physics. Finally, you will go on to take advanced courses in a number of subjects, including
- experimental physics,
- mechanics,
- optics,
- quantum mechanics and
- thermal physics.
Physics students can also take advantage of opportunities for independent study and undergraduate research.
The specific courses you take will depend on whether you are pursuing a BA or a BS.
Physics BA
You’ll take 56 of your total 123 credit hours within the major. Some sample courses you may take are
- Classical Electromagnetism;
- Electricity and Magnetism; and
- Introduction to Modern Physics.

Physics BS
You’ll take 72–74 of your total 123 credit hours within the major. Some sample courses you may take are
- Introduction to Atomic, Nuclear and Particle Physics;
- Introduction to Quantum Mechanics; and
- Introduction to Solid State Physics.
