The traditions. The excitement. The Owl pride.
At Temple, you can be a part of it all.
Nothing unites a campus like big-time college athletics. Our Division I teams have a long history of success in NCAA competition, and our student-athletes are known for displaying a high level of integrity and sportsmanship.
No matter the sport or venue, our athletic teams will make you proud to be a Temple Owl.

Varsity Sports
Temple boasts 19 men’s and women’s varsity athletic teams, 18 of which compete at the Division I level—representing the pinnacle of collegiate sports. In 2013, the university became a full member of the American Athletic Conference, one of the nation’s elite athletic conferences.
In addition to the American Athletic Conference, the Owls also have conference affiliations with
- the BIG EAST Conference (field hockey),
- the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (women’s gymnastics),
- the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (men’s crew) and
- the National Intercollegiate Women's Fencing Association (fencing).

Intramural Sports
In addition to varsity sports, Temple students may also participate in intramural leagues with their friends or roommates. All leagues and tournaments are specified as men’s, women’s, open or co-recreational where everyone plays together.
Intramural activities are classified into one of three main areas.
After creating your own team, you'll complete against other students in your sport of choice on Temple’s Main Campus. If you don’t already have a team, you can register as a free agent and be matched with a team. Intramural sports are a perfect way to stay active, connect with new people and make lasting memories.

Temple’s Owl Transformed
In 2023, Temple University updated its signature Owl mark with the help of alum Joe Bosack, TYL ’04, and TYL ’22 alums. The modernized Owl symbolizes much more than a new logo—embodying strength, resiliency, and optimism for an ever-changing future.

Stella, a great horned owl, began her career as Temple’s live mascot in 2013. During home games, Stella can be found cheering on the sidelines of Lincoln Financial Field alongside Temple’s official mascot, Hooter.

- She currently resides in the Elmwood Park Zoo in Norristown, Pennsylvania, where she also is a wildlife conservation teacher.
- Stella is in the possession of the Elmwood Park Zoo by the authority of U.S. Fish and Wildlife.
- Stella originally hails from Washington state.
- Her favorite foods include rodents, rabbits and snakes.
