Biography

Dr. Krista Schroeder is a nurse scientist, educator, and clinician. Her research focuses on illuminating and
addressing the impact social determinants of health (SDOH) on individual and population well-being. Her
most recent SDOH research centers on populations affected by traumatic experiences, such as violence
or sexual assault, and focuses on the need for trauma-informed approaches to improving health. She
believes that SDOH research must be informed by direct engagement with patients and communities, and
thus maintains active clinical practice as a critical care/emergency department nurse at a safety net
hospital and serves as an on-call sexual assault nurse examiner for a citywide sexual assault clinic. Dr.
Schroeder’s research is complemented by a program of pedagogy and mentorship that advances
students’ abilities to address upstream social and environmental drivers of health. She completed a BSN
at Bloomsburg University, a PhD and NIH T32 pre-doctoral fellowship at Columbia University, a NIH T32
postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania, and a Graduate Certificate at Temple
University’s Department of Geography and Urban Studies. Currently, she is an Associate Professor of
Nursing (Tenured) at Temple University College of Public Health.
