College of Liberal Arts Research

Temple University is a community of diverse, curious thinkers who are eager to discover more and create real impact. As a public research institution, Temple equips its students with the tools and opportunities they need to identify their passions, pursue their ideas and create real, sustainable change in the world.

Students in the College of Liberal Arts work collaboratively with each other, faculty and industry experts to tackle some of the world’s most pressing issues and answer some of its biggest questions. 

Research Facilities

Students in the College of Liberal Arts have access to the following state-of-the-art research centers and institutes.

• The Center for the Humanities at Temple is an interdisciplinary forum for scholarship and intellectual inquiry in the humanities, intended to bridge the disciplinary divide between departments and colleges. 

• The Cybersecurity in Application, Research, and Education (CARE) Lab provides students with a foundation in the social science approach to cybersecurity. It prioritizes intersectional dialogue across academia, industry, nonprofits and government to emphasize an inclusive understanding of cyberattacks and cybersecurity.

College of Liberal Arts Research Opportunities

The following opportunities are examples of the types of undergraduate research programs available at Temple. 

Partner with a Faculty Member

Students can work alongside faculty members to support ongoing research initiatives. This is a great opportunity for students to get first-hand experience with the research process under the guidance of an established scholar. To learn more, set up an appointment with a faculty member to discuss their research and how you might support their work.

You can also check with a department chair or program director about those faculty members who are looking for research assistants or if work-study positions are available. Faculty members may also have grant money to support a research assistant. For example, the Liberal Arts Undergraduate Research Awards (LAURAs) provides opportunities for student-faculty teams to collaborate over a semester or summer (including the summer semester) after graduation on a research project. Students are encouraged ask a faculty member to mentor them for a LAURA Scholars Award. Another opportunity is the Merit Scholarship Stipend (from Honors).

Develop an Independent Project

All students complete an independent research project as part of their senior capstone project. If you are interested in a specific topic, you have to option to participate in an independent research project under faculty supervision before your senior year. There are also options to do this for credit. Temple also offers universitywide resources for independent research projects through programs such as the Creative Arts, Research and Scholarship (CARAS) and Diamond Research Scholars Awards.

University Opportunities

• The Diamond Peer Teachers Program provides undergraduates with opportunities to work closely with faculty members and provide supplemental instruction in low-level and GenEd courses.
• The Symposium for Undergraduate Research and Creativity, which is open to all schools and colleges, provides intellectually motivated undergraduates the opportunity to present and defend original research or creative work among colleagues, faculty, family and friends.
