Internships & Opportunities

A number of assistantships and academic internships are available for PhD candidates. Full awards carry a cash stipend plus full tuition remission for the fall and spring terms. Partial awards also are available.

Duties for assistantships and internships vary but typically include teaching, tutoring, classroom assistance, research, artistic performance and/or direct service related to academic programs.

National Association for Music Education (NAfME)

Music education students are invited to join the Boyer chapter of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), which also provides membership to the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA). Members receive publications such as

  • Music Educators Journal, 
  • PMEA News and
  • Teaching Music.

NAfME members also benefit from presentations by visiting professional music educators and regular meetings with colleagues. The chapter sends members to the annual Pennsylvania Music Educators Association conference.

Graduates from the Music Education PhD program are prepared for future careers as

  • academic researchers,
  • arts education supervisors,
  • college/conservatory/university music educators,
  • community arts education educators/supervisors,
  • ensemble directors
  • music education supervisors,
  • pre-K/elementary/secondary school music educators,
  • private instructors

Boyer College of Music and Dance provides small class sizes, intimate performance ensembles and a tight-knit academic community. Faculty members mentor students on an individual basis, helping them seek out internships and job opportunities.
