IBC Foundation Healthcare Scholars Pipeline Program: A Partnership with Temple University

The College of Public Health’s Department of Nursing, in partnership with the Independence Blue Cross Foundation, is collaborating with area high schools to implement a bundle of evidence-based strategies to prepare students from underrepresented populations and disadvantaged backgrounds for success in nursing education at Temple University.

As part of this partnership, the Independence Blue Cross Foundation will provide full cost-of-attendance scholarships, for tuition and educational expenses, to talented students enrolled full time in Temple’s BSN program. Candidates for these scholarships will be from partner high schools in neighborhoods surrounding Temple University.

Participating BSN students will be provided with evidence- and needs-based supportive services and programs to ensure academic success and on-time degree completion. This includes specialized learning communities, individual learning assessments and development plans, time management coaching, dedicated advisors, tutors, learning specialists, study hall monitors, and mentoring.

Additionally, this partnership will provide opportunities for underrepresented students from partnering high schools [PDF] to attend summer and winter break camps focused on increasing their awareness of the role of nursing in the health of individuals, families and communities as well as their interest in careers in nursing and to help them to craft strong college applications.

Building on existing partnerships with area high schools, this program will adapt a set of strategies demonstrated to advance academic success and goal attainment to promote student success in nursing. This will extend and enhance Temple University’s sustained commitment to serving Philadelphia and educating a resilient nursing workforce dedicated to our community.
